A lower rate environment this year will boost the thesis for investing in emerging markets, according to Christine Phillpotts, a portfolio manager at Ariel Investments. Phillpotts, who manages Ariel's Emerging Markets Value and Emerging Markets Value ex-China strategies, told CNBC's Mike Santoli at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting that there are several reasons why emerging markets should outperform in 2024 and beyond. For starters, a lower interest rate environment would mean that investors would increase flows to ex-U.S. regions, including emerging markets. The portfolio manager noted that valuation discounts for emerging market equities are at all-time lows, based on a comparison of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index versus the S & P 500. For investors interested in artificial intelligence beneficiaries, Phillpotts highlighted that key opportunities in emerging markets lay within the picks-and-shovels plays that "will power the AI revolution."

The decision to remove Bakish as CEO comes as Paramount Global closes in on a merger agreement with Skydance Media. A number of large common shareholders, including Gamco Investors, Ariel Investments, Matrix and Aspen Sky Trust have publicly criticized the deal, arguing it destroys value for common shareholders. Paramount Global shares jumped about 5% in premarket trading Monday. Typically, Paramount Global shareholders, such as Gabelli, would compare an offer to the standalone company's prospects — hence his comments about not seeing a sale at all. But by removing Bakish, Redstone and the Paramount Global board are now throwing the status quo into chaos.

Stellar prices for gold have also stolen investor attention, with the precious metal scaling a new record of over $2,100. The record-breaking numbers for markets, however, haven't stopped some investors from worrying about three key issues. Inflation resurgenceAfter months of cooling, U.S inflation is proving itself to be more stubborn than experts had predicted. That's despite the Federal Reserve embarking on an aggressive monetary policy campaign over the past year, in a bid to tame consumer price pressures from their 40-year highs. Ariel Investments' Vice Chair Charlie Bobrinskoy told CNBC markets are not focused on China's residential real estate problems.

Brewer Molson Coors said on Tuesday that it expects to maintain its market share gains in the year ahead. Those revenue gains were in large part tied to consumers migrating away from AB InBev 's Bud Light products after boycotts began last April. It was a return to profit for Molson Coors from a loss a year ago. Ariel Investments, which has invested in Molson Coors since 2018, also remains confident in the stock's performance. "The core brands were growing dollar share even before the Bud Light controversy," said Tim Fidler, Ariel Investments' portfolio manager.
